Simple and Frugal for Father's Day
Attention Frugal Home Cooks; you’re in charge of making an extraordinary side dish for dad, this Father’s Day. No compromise. He deserves it. Besides, it’s June. Picnic weather. Grills are smoking with ribs, steaks and burgers. Fresh corn on the cob and lots of other cold sides. In my opinion, it’s not a picnic if you don’t serve cold slices of watermelon and casserole filled with baked beans. Why not go from ordinary to impressive this Father‘s Day? In conjunction with the gift and greeting card, you can bump up the occasion with my quick, smoky, sweet, meaty Deluxe Baked Beans. Turn some heads and curl some toes. One forkful and Daddy will be looking for the person that made this dish. Smile with your best cheesy look and give him a wink.
You’ll be proud to say, “I made that just for you, Daddy.”

When I say quick, I mean quick. If you follow my recipe, you'll end up with baked beans that have a thick, rich and tender consistency. You need 1 pot and 1great serving dish for presentation. That’s it. Now you can spend time getting yourself together or prepping the rest of the meal. You know I kept the recipe ingredients frugal and simple but these baked beans get the “throw down“ award.
Sade - Soldier of Love. I was feeling radical and needed to get this blog done today, due to my work schedule and this coming Father’s Day celebration. The military drum sound with volume on maximum, had me doing a Cha Cha stomp in my bare feet. Not really a throwback but if you like Sade music, you feel me.
Serves 8 as a side dish or 4 as a main dish for about $4.50.
I’ll be enjoying Father’s Day with my dad at the Annual Father’s Day Car Show in Hermitage, PA. Photos of Daddy’s Vega have their own tab on this web site. See above. I hope that you all have a relaxing Father’s Day and get in that kitchen.

Some people rise early for work, some for workouts and some of us just roll over and hit the snooze. This weekend if you just happen to sleep in a little, like yours truly did, no worries. You can just whip up my Brunch Strata and at least serve folks by Eleven. Or Twelve. Or whenever!
We’re going into the summer months and it’s a treat to sleep in a bit on weekends and eat outdoors in our cute lounge around wear. The sun is out. Windows are open. Blinds are pulled up. Birds are chirping. Neighbors are mowing
and dogs are barking. A fresh breeze blows through the kitchen. A steaming cup of French Vanilla coffee, toasted French bread slices, a cup of tropical fruit and my Brunch Strata on a tray. A dreamy way to mimic that “just got ROOM
SERVICE ” feeling. Toss in the daily paper or a good paperback, throw your feet up and take in the view.
Frugal Home Cook Story
Hospital cafeteria’s get a bad rap, but I was fortunate to work in a location that had an aspiring and fearless chef. She made Strata for the regulars to try. Something different and I had my face all twisted up. Guess who went back for seconds? My boss was right behind me. I got turned out on a café Strata, so you know I had to developed my own recipe. End of story.

Just a tidbit about ingredients. I only use one brand of breakfast sausage because it consistently renders LESS fat. Drum roll please. Surprise! Great Value Breakfast Sausage, a Wal-Mart brand. I’ve used it for years and I’m never disappointed. Very little shrinkage and taste like that name brand stuff that’s double the price. In fact the majority of the ingredients used in this dish are Great Value products.
Quality and savings. Wha la!
Here’s the breakdown:
Anita Baker - Giving You The Best That I’ve Got
Slow pace Cha Cha, while fixing your brunch tray. This is lounging, peace of mind music. Soft and mellow for this “Room Service” kinda day. Piano makes you want to lay your head back. Close your eyes and experience the moment. Yep…I do
throwbacks often because my selections are timeless. They bring back good memories and above, I know how to relax. Catch a clue.
